Construction and demolition (C&D) debris is the single largest waste stream in the United States by tonnage, exceeding municipal solid waste by more than 2x. C&D waste includes concrete, wood, metals, drywall, asphalt, roofing, and mixed materials. Despite its massive volume, C&D recycling has historically lagged other sectors due to material heterogeneity, low tipping fees, and manual sorting limitations. Robotic sorting, advanced material identification, and digital marketplaces for recycled aggregate are now making C&D recycling economically viable and scalable.
C&D waste is the overlooked giant of the waste industry. Robotic sorting is the key technology unlock, enabling processing of chaotic mixed debris at 4x manual speed with 96% purity. Rising landfill costs, C&D landfill bans, and green building mandates are shifting economics in favor of recycling. The infrastructure gap is massive—the US needs 2-3x more C&D processing capacity.
